Freehand Studio introduces Daarun! Design, an in-house product brand geared towards bicycle storage, display and transportation ideas. These products are concocted by none else than an avid cyclist with a DIY bug. The first product in its line-up is the Wingman, an attachment for towing a mountain bike with a scooter or motorbike. The idea came from a wish to reach and explore local off-road trails without having to pedal the distance, as also to avoid using a car when just going out solo.

The unit attaches to existing mounting points on a 2-wheeler's frame, coupled by a tool-less bolt that allows quick attachment / detachment. The wheel cradle adjusts to bicycle wheel sizes from 24 to 29 inches. The Wingman is made to order since a bit of customizing is required for fitting it to different makes and models of 2-wheelers.

MIKE, THE MONOWHEEL

Client: Self-initiative

Team: Anindya, Ekkagrat Kalsi

Mike, a monowheel, came to life as a recreational vehicle designed and built around a salvaged moped engine.

It was built in spare time from Anindya's duties as associate faculty at NID's Transportation and Automobile Design post-grad programme. Mike was showcased at NID Ahmedabad’s 2008 graduate show.

Custom fabrication and hand-built components were combined with a 'steampunk' aesthetic to produce this fully functional monowheel. This was a ground-breaking DIY project that introduced us to the hands-on world of shopfloor machining, fabrication. and assembly.

A fiendishly difficult ride to master as is evident in the videos, Mike nevertheless entertained anyone brave enough to try it, while also drawing amused admiration from onlookers.

The project brief called to improve the existing Indian cycle rickshaw, focusing on human and technical factors. A field study revealed many weak points; the result of misguided cost-saving measures over time. A thorough re-design was undertaken and a fully featured prototype was executed for the client.

Some notable features of the design:

  • Lower unladen weight with a stronger, modular frame. Weight brought down to 65 kgs from 90+ kgs.

  • Vastly improved ergonomics for the rickshaw puller, sunshade, smoother operation.

  • Increased passenger comfort with a lower step-on platform, breathable light-weight seat, vibration damping.

  • Versatility of use with a fold-away seat to enable cargo carrying.

  • Better mechanicals - robust 3-speed gears, rear disc brake, sturdy tyres, sealed bearings, easier access for under-body maintenance.

A variant of the Jaipur passenger rickshaw was adapted to serve Goa's urgent need for a door-to-door dry waste collection system. The modular frame helped achieve a cost-effective yet distinctive design with identical mechanicals carried over. The 'trike' allows for collection and transport of dry waste under six categories – paper, plastic, glass, metals, bio and non-recyclable waste with colour coded bins arranged in the purpose-built rear section. An electric
assist variant was also made and successfully tested for use in larger urban circuits.
